Navarino helps Enhance Crew Welfare with Vikand – A real world case study with Gourdomichalis Maritime

One of our earliest Vikand customers was Gourdomichalis Maritime SA, who have been using Vikand’s telemedicine and healthcare support to proactively add another layer of protection for its crews.

Thanks to 24/7 access to Vikand’s expert medical team, Gourdomichalis seafarers have successfully managed incidents that otherwise would have posed significant operational and health risks. These included immediate response to injuries for example in one case, a crew member suffered a foot injury while working on deck. Vikand doctors were able to assess the injury via video consultation, provide initial treatment advice, and monitor the healing process – eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming diversions.

Another notable incident involved a crew member who fell from a ladder and suffered an upper back injury with a brief loss of consciousness. Upon consultation with Vikand, the individual was in a serious but stable condition – alert and orientated. Vikand doctors implemented a detailed treatment and observation plan, including hourly neurological checks, regular teleconsultations and pain management. The patient was referred for a CT scan upon reaching shore, while onboard care continued under Vikand’s supervision for six days without any signs of deterioration. This case remains open, pending final shoreside evaluation and highlights the critical value of having immediate, expert medical oversight during potentially serious onboard emergencies.
