Kew Garden’s top 10 new species of 2023

In 2023, Kew Gardens and its partner organizations globally named 74 plants and 15 fungi, showcasing the incredible diversity of life on Earth. This effort is crucial as many newly discovered species are under threat, with three-quarters of undescribed plant species facing extinction. The discovery of new species, often found in endangered habitats or represented by a single surviving individual, underscores the urgent need for conservation. Kew Gardens plays a vital role in protecting these species, integrating their habitats into Important Plant Areas and conserving their seeds through initiatives like the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership.
