As part of its Connecting Greece with the Future” program, Navarino is launching a collaboration with the Hellenic Lighthouse Service to provide free Starlink systems to some of the most important lighthouses in Greece.

In mid-October, Tasos Barbas, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Navarino, and the company’s “Green Ambassador,” Akis Temperidis, visited the Lighthouse Service headquarters in Piraeus, where they met with the Director of Lighthouses, Captain Stathis Pappis.

The Navarino representatives brought with them the first Starlink terminal, which was installed at the Service’s offices and is already supporting the needs of the administrative staff.

Navarino’s sponsorship aims to provide uninterrupted, high-speed internet connectivity to some of the most remote lighthouses in Greece, enabling lighthouse keepers and technical staff to communicate seamlessly with their central administration offices, Service Partners, and passing vessels. A part of Navarino’s ongoing CSR efforts, the objective of the initiative is to both improve the living and working conditions for those who man the lighthouses, and also to enhance the safety of all vessels navigating in Greek waters.

Today, Greece operates approximately 1,600 lighthouses and beacons, 58 of which are manned. They are mostly built of stone and are located in the remote capes of both mainland Greece and its island regions.

46 of these lighthouses have been designated as protected monuments by the Ministry of Culture, as they were constructed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and hold significant architectural value.

They are an integral part of the country’s maritime heritage and serve as important landmarks for sailors. Some of these lighthouses are also open to visitors and have seen strong interest from tourists.

The first lighthouses to be equipped with Starlink systems from Navarino will be the two southernmost ones on the Greek mainland, located at Cape Maleas and Cape Tainaron.
